Ship Launching Process by Evergreen Marine Air Bags

This process can be used for the launching operation of cargo vessel,chemical vessel,AHTS,floating dock,and so on,most of vessels under 18,000 tons(lightweight).

Preparation

1.       According to the calculation,prepared enough air bags,towing winches,air compressor and other instruments needed.
Before operation,marine air bags should be inflated working pressure to test its safety and airtightness.If there is any problem,marine air bags should be fixed before use.

2.       Clear all the obstacles and sharp iron nail from launch ramp.Check vessel bottom to ensure no welding scar which may puncture marine air bags.


Lifting

5.       Insert the marine air bags between support blocks and inflate them to lift vessel.When vessel is lifted,people can take out support blocks under the ship.
A.     For the light weight ship,small amount of air bags can fully lift the ship at one time then it is easy to remove the blocks and insert left air bags for launch.
B.      For the heavy ship,it will be lifted by marine air bags step by step.First people need to find the best point for marine air bag lifting.The best position means where air bags can get big contact area with vessel bottom and also far away from vessel’s gravity center.People may refer to the right drawing to find lifting condition need to be satisfied.

Introduction

Ship Launching Methods

Launching of ships is one of the most important methods of the entire ship construction process.
Last few years have seen a number of developments in the field of ship launching systems in order to improve the safety and stability of the ship in the water.
Different types of Ship launching methods
Traditionally, ship launching in the water is done using four main types of methods. These methods are:
  1. Gravitational type launching
  2. Floating-out type launching
  3. Mechanical Type launching
  4. Rubber Airbag launching
1. Gravitational type launchingThe gravitational type launching system is further divided into three main types, which are:
  • Longitudinal Oiled Slideway Launching
  • Longitudinal Steel – Roller Slideway Launching
  • Side Oiled Slideway Launching
Longitudinal Oiled Slideway Launching
The longitudinal oiled slideway launching is one of the oldest forms of launching systems. Using this system, the ship slides on a

slideway and under its own weight enters the water. Oil or wax is used to assist in the sliding process.
The main advantage of this method is that it uses simple equipment and can be used for vessels with different tonnage and types. However, the coating of oil which is used to slide the ship smoothly can pollute the water. There is also danger of huge pressure on the front part of the ship during the launch.
Longitudinal Steel – Roller Slideway Launching
In this type of ship launching method steel rollers are used instead of oil to reduce friction during sliding. This method uses high-intensity steel rollers, security devices, and steel board for the launching. The steel plate on the wooden slide helps in the sliding process and the slide rails help them to protect from steel balls.
Net bags are used at the end of the slide to collect the steel balls so that they can be used again. This method is most effective and easy to start. However, the initial installation charges are high.
Side Oiled Slideway Launching

The side oiled slideway launching system is also one of the most widely used ship launching systems. This type of system is mainly of two types.
In the first type, the slideway extends into the water and the ship slides into the water using the slideway. In the second method the slideway doesn’t go until the water and the ship along with the frame slides into the water. The ship then becomes steady based on its own buoyancy and stability factors. Such launching requires the ship to have great stability and strength.
2. Floating- Out Type Launching The floating out type launching is carrying out for ships which are built in dry-docks and are launched by filling the dock with water. (Technically this is not a ship launching procedure)

 The floating-out type launching system is a simple, effective, and safe procedure. Though the initial investment is high, this type of method is most widely used by shipbuilders.
3. Mechanical Type Launching  
The mechanical type ship launching system can be divided into following types:
  • Longitudinal mechanized slideway launching
  • Two points longitudinal mechanized chute launching
  • Wedge-shaped mechanized vehicles launching
  • Slope change transverse area mechanized vertical chute launching
  • High-low track slide mechanization launching

All the above mentioned system requires a mechanical feature to launch a ship. The construction and maintenance expenditure is high, whereas the mobility and controlling factors of the systems are not up-to-the-mark. All these methods are mainly used for smaller size vessels and cannot be used for large, high tonnage ships.
4. Air bags Launching
Launching ships using rubber air bags is an innovative and safe technique to launch ships in water. These rubber airbags are usually cylindrical in shape with hemispherical heads at both ends. They are made of reinforced rubber layers and have high load capacity. This method can easily be used in all types and sizes of vessels.

SELECTION OF SHIP LAUNCHING AIRBAG(1)

Marine airbags are found to be powerful and versatile tools for many marine projects such as disembarking ships, heavy transportation, re-floating salvage etc. But how to select suitable marine airbags for a specific project? Let us see suggestions from the following comments of a professional manufcture of marine airbags.
Marine airbags are widely used for ship launching, heavy transportation and marine salvage nowadays. Marine airbags are often called ship launching airbags that indicate the most popular application of these heavy duty airbags is for ship or marine launching. It is estimated that more than 80 percent new built ships by the shipyard(shipowner,shipbuilding) who’s DWT below 60,000 are launched by marine airbags.

Marine airbags are found to be powerful and versatile tools for many other marine projects such as disembarking ships, heavy transportation, re-floating salvage etc. But how to select suitable marine airbags for a specific project? That's the topic we are going to talk today.

Marine airbag's specification

to decide the marine airbag's effective length is an important issue.It should be not less than the maximum width of vessel or anything you want to move by marine airbags. But when you arrange two rows of marine airbags, please keep in mind to calculate the total length to avoid contact of marine airbags in two rows. The total length of airbags can be estimated to be effective length plus it's diameter. It says an marine airbag with effective length 16 meters and diameter 1.5 m then its total length is 17.5 m.

Diameter of an marine airbag is decided by the height of your vessel's support blocks. If the support block is 1 m high, then you should choose airbag's diameter not less than 1.5 m. If you get 1.5 m high blocks, the airbag with 2m diameters will suits well.

For air lift use, airbag's diameter or length is mainly decided by the buoyancy you need from airbag. And also consider the pressure of marine airbag stands if you apply airbags in deep water.

For caisson transport by marine airbags, the most suitable diameter is 0.8-1 m. Marine airbag's performance is decided by its component plies. For air lift use or light vessel (launch weight below 2000 tons) launch, mid-pressure airbags are enough. For heavy duty work, the high pressure airbag should be selected. Generally speaking, airbags with 6 plies are enough for most engineering works. Only in some rigorous situation, airbags will need 7-8 plies to enhance its performance. For example, if people use airbags to lift heavy caisson but their contact area is limited, and then airbags will need higher pressure and more plies to ensure the safety. 
Reference for marine airbag selection  
There are two industrial standards for marine airbags in China.: one is product standard named "Air bag for ship up to or down to launching way "(CB/T 3795-1996 / CB/T 3795-2009); another is technology standard named "Technological Requirements for ship Upgrading or Launching Relying on Air-bags"(CB/T 3837-1998).The latter offer the basic calculation of marine airbags employed in a marine project.

According to Chinese industrial standards people will know the approximate quantity and specifications of marine airbags needed for their projects then consult the manufacturer to confirm the design. There maybe optional specifications to be selected for a specific marine project and a good manufacturer should know the best choice. The data of marine airbags' blasting pressure will reveal the product's quality level. For top quality marine airbags, such as one 1.5 m diameter and 7 m length Evergreen marine airbag, the blasting pressure is 0.67 Mpa which indicates the safe coefficient is more than 5 considering its 0.12Mpa working pressure.

Full technical service is the qualification of a good company. Although general calculation formula or performance data of marine airbags can be got from most factories but detailed calculations based on mathematic model and experience is more important to the success of marine projects.
